How to Make Silicone Caulk Molds for Jewelry Cabochons

Silicone Caulk Mold Tutorial

Since 2013 I've been using this method to make silicone caulk molds for my resin jewelry cabochons. The silicone molds are reusable and will last a long time. I have some molds that I use to this day that I created back in 2013!

There is only two ingredients for making a silicone caulk mold. You will need 100% silicone caulk and suppository glycerin. Both are fairly inexpensive and easy to obtain.

100% Silicone Caulk

The silicone caulk can be purchased at just about any hardware store. The GE brand that I use in this video was bought from Home Depot. It's very import that the silicone tube says 100% silicone. If it doesn't say 100% silicone, it will NOT work.

Glycerin

Glycerin reacts with the silicone and causes it to cure. Normally, silicone caulk is used in a thin layer and will cure just fine on it's own. Since we are making a mold with the silicone, a larger thicker amount of silicone is used. Without glycerin, the silicone will not cure in the middle. Just the outside layer of silicone will cure. If it wasn't for the glycerin, we would have a sticky mess! 

I used the Fleet brand of liquid suppository glycerin that I bought in the pharmacy department at Walmart. Here is a link for a one dollar off coupon from Fleet's website. I've been asked if vegetable glycerin will work. So I tried vegetable glycerin twice and found that it does NOT work. After doing some research, I've found that there are two types of glycerin. One is vegetable based and the other is petroleum based. I'm not positive, but since the VG did not work, I'm to assume that the suppository type is petroleum based.

I don't know the exact ratio of silicone to glycerin. But It doesn't take much glycerin. In this video I used about 15 or so drops for a small 30 mm cabochon.

This tree of life necklace pendant was constructed with sterling silver wire. Set behind the tree of life is a 22.75ct crazy lace agate gemstone cabochon. To accentuate the wrapped wire of the tree of life, I applied an antique finish and then polished the high areas to a bright lusher.

You will receive the exact, unique, one of a kind, handmade, wire wrapped tree of life pendant shown in the photos.

Over 7 hours of craftsmanship, polishing, and buffing went into the creation of this handmade wire wrapped tree of life necklace pendant.

So the tree of life pendant can be worn right away, I've included an adjustable slip knot leather cord until you replace the cord with something better.

Crazy Lace Agate is a variety of banded Chalcedony and is predominantly white, with layers of creamy browns, blacks and grays. Some may include layers of yellow ochre, gold, scarlet and red. Agate is sometimes called the earth rainbow because, in its various forms, the concentric bands in nature form nearly every color the earth can produce, including a colorless form.

Dried Flowers & Resin - Tree of Life Necklace Pendant - Handmade Jewelry by Tim Whetsel

I was taking a hike in the mountains on the Skyline Trail in Southern California and found these beautiful dried wild flowers. I picked a bunch and brought them home and cast them in some resin. The cabochons came out awesome! Here is a sterling silver tree of life pendant made with my new wild flowers cabochon. It came out so well that I made 5 more of these resin and wildflower cabochons. This is a new kind of orgonite that I made right before Christmas. I made plenty of wire wrapped tree of life pendants right before Christmas and sold all of them! Wish I made more! I do have one in my shop now. This is my new opalescent orgonite that glows in the dark. It dances with blues and greens as the light hits it and the pendant moves. I knew these opalescent orgonite cabochons where going to be a hot seller in my tree of life pendants. Since then I've made a lot more of these cabochons and will be wrapping them into pendants over the next few months. If I'm out of these, send me a message and I can make a pendant for you in a day or two.

Handmade Wire Wrapped Sterling Silver Tree of Life Pendant with Purple Orgonite

I've had many requests for purple tree of life pendants. So in my last batch of orgonite making, I've made three purple glow in the dark orgonite cabochons. This is the very first tree of life pendant I have made with the new purple orgonite. And of course it's wrapped with sterling silver wire, antiqued, and polished. This came out great!

Here is a close up view of the new purple orgonite. It's hard to see in the photo, but it does have a decent amount of sparkle in the cabochon.

And here you can see the orgonite cabochon glowing in the dark.

Tree of Life Wire Wrapped Pendant - Sterling Silver - Green Orgonite Glow in The Dark

One of my most popular tree of life pendants are made with my green orgonite which glows in the dark. I was able to make about 3 green orgonite cabochons in my last batch of orgonite. Here is the first of the green wire wrapped with sterling silver.
